Install & onboarding

Same Phase 1 path as Download and FAQ: install locally, then bind private and scan.

Recommended steps

  1. Download macOS or Windows from the download page (verify version and hash).
  2. Install and launch; the main window should open without crashing.
  3. Register or sign in.
  4. Create or bind a private folder (path you choose, readable).
  5. Pick default or third-party models per instructions.
  6. Add files and trigger the first scan.
  7. Open the workbench, ask, verify citations in Ask/Search and Reader.

Troubleshooting

If a step fails, read FAQ for data boundaries and check API base and account in Settings.

macOS: Gatekeeper & notarization

Unsigned or non-notarized builds may be blocked on first launch—use System Settings → Privacy & Security, or right‑click → Open. For **public downloads**, complete Developer ID signing, notarytool, and stapler in CI; otherwise support load spikes.

After install: API URL

Production installers should embed your public API at build time (BIGBRAIN_DEFAULT_API_BASE). If Settings still shows http://127.0.0.1:8008, you may have a dev build—set the correct API base in Settings or reinstall from the official download page.

Windows

If SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher, only install from official links and verify hashes; use internal distribution where required.
